BIS cracks down on non-certified products on E-Commerce platforms; Amazon, Flipkart among violators

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has intensified its crackdown on non-compliant products sold through major e-commerce platforms, conducting raids at the warehouses of e-commerce platforms, including Amazon and Flipkart, in Lucknow, Gurugram, and Delhi, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

In a recent operation on March 7, 2025, BIS seized 215 toys and 24 hand blenders without mandatory certification from an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow.

Similar raids in February at an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram and a Flipkart facility in Gurugram led to the confiscation of non-certified aluminium foils, metallic water bottles, PVC cables, speakers, and other consumer goods.

Investigations linked the non-certified products to Techvision International Pvt Ltd, prompting BIS to raid its Delhi facilities, where officials uncovered thousands of non-compliant electric appliances, including water heaters, food mixers, room heaters, and gas stoves.

BIS has initiated legal action under the BIS Act, 2016, with penalties ranging from Rs 2 lakh to ten times the product's value, and potential imprisonment for violators.

To protect consumers from substandard products, BIS urges buyers to verify certifications using the BIS Care app and has issued notices to e-commerce platforms to ensure compliance with mandatory safety standards.
