Bihar Election Results 2025: NDA's social engineering and welfare push trump Mahagathbandhan’s 'Vote Chori' narrative

NDA’s welfare-led campaign and Nitish Kumar’s ‘Sushasan’ pitch have delivered a decisive advantage in Bihar, overshadowing the Opposition’s focus on alleged electoral discrepancies. Rahul Gandhi’s mobilisation efforts failed to translate into votes as women and rural blocs consolidated behind the BJP–JD(U) alliance.

NDA's social engineering, welfare schemes trumps Mahagathbandhan's Vote Chori

As the Bihar Assembly Election results continue to unfold, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has emerged as the clear frontrunner, driven by a potent mix of social engineering, targeted welfare delivery, and a united leadership pitch led by Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The early mandate, reflected in strong leads for the BJP, JD(U) and key allies, indicates that the ruling coalition’s message resonated far more deeply than the Mahagathbandhan’s campaign centred on allegations of “vote chori”.

The opposition bloc’s strategy revolved heavily around Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s 16-day ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, aimed at contesting the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision exercise. However, the crowds Gandhi attracted failed to translate into votes. The Congress and the wider Mahagathbandhan were unable to tap into the issues that matter most to Bihar’s electorate - livelihood stability, women’s empowerment, and welfare access.

Bihar Election Results 2025: Nitish Kumar's women-focused welfare model outperforms the opposition

At the heart of the NDA’s appeal is Nitish Kumar’s long-running focus on women’s empowerment. The JD(U) chief, once again projected as ‘Sushasan Babu’, reinforced his governance credentials through initiatives such as the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana, which provides an initial support of Rs 10,000 and can rise to Rs 2 lakh depending on business success. The state scheme runs parallel to central programmes like Jan Dhan, Lakhpati Didi, Mudra, Drone Didi and Bima Sakhi, creating a wide social base of female beneficiaries.

This shift in Bihar’s social bloc - from the Opposition’s expected “M-factor” (Muslim vote consolidation) to Nitish’s “Mahila factor” — has been decisive. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced this narrative repeatedly during the campaign, saying both he and Nitish Kumar were committed to “service, prosperity and dignity” for women in the state.

Bihar Election Results: BJP-JDU alliance converts perception into electoral numbers

Politics is perception, and Bihar turns perception into arithmetic. In 2020, the JD(U) won 43 of the 115 seats it contested, with a vote share of 15.39 per cent. This time, it is leading in close to 80 of the 101 seats it fought, with its vote share nearing 19 per cent.

The BJP, too, has strengthened its base. From 74 wins in 2020 with a 19.46 per cent vote share, it is now ahead in nearly 90 of the 101 seats contested, with a vote share above 21 per cent. The party’s electoral machinery - with senior leaders including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh investing heavily in Bihar - has delivered yet another formidable performance.

Chirag Paswan's return to the NDA strengthens the alliance

Another critical factor in the NDA’s sweep is the resurgence of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Chirag Paswan’s decision to exit the NDA before the 2020 elections cost him heavily; he secured just one seat then. His return to the alliance transformed his fortunes, with the party sweeping all five Lok Sabha seats it contested in 2024. In the current Assembly polls, LJP(R) is leading in 19 seats, playing a pivotal role in bolstering the NDA tally.

Opposition narrative on ‘vote chori’ fails to gain traction

The Mahagathbandhan’s attempt to frame the election around electoral discrepancies appears to have found little traction. Allegations of irregularities in the voter list - central to Rahul Gandhi’s campaign - did not resonate with the wider electorate, which remained more focused on governance delivery and economic stability.

The alliance has also struggled to form a counter-narrative to the NDA’s welfare architecture and cultural messaging. The BJP–JD(U) combine positioned itself as a coalition championing dignity, safety and opportunity for Bihar, while portraying the grand alliance as fragmented and disconnected from grassroots concerns.

Mandate signals stability and continuity in Bihar’s political landscape

While final results are still awaited, the mandate is already taking shape: Bihar appears to have chosen continuity, stability, and welfare-backed governance over grievance-based mobilisation. Nitish Kumar, at 74, has once again demonstrated his ability to navigate political shifts and voter expectations. For the NDA, the numbers underline a winning alliance “for all reasons”; for the Mahagathbandhan, it marks a stark moment of introspection.

As the trends solidify, the NDA’s blend of social engineering, strong leadership projection and targeted welfare appears to have decisively outperformed the Opposition’s attempt to frame the election as a battle over electoral integrity.
