Bihar is set for a decisive political shift as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) prepares to announce the state’s next chief minister at 4 pm on April 14 in Patna. The development comes amid strong indications that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will resign the same day after chairing his final Cabinet meeting. A packed schedule of BJP, JD(U) and NDA legislature party meetings will determine the new leader before the formal announcement. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 15 at 11 am, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend, underlining the significance of the transition.
The BJP legislature party will meet at 2 pm with 89 MLAs and 22 MLCs expected to attend. This will be followed by the JD(U) legislature party meeting at around 3 pm at Nitish Kumar’s residence.
Soon after, the NDA legislature party is likely to convene to take the final decision. Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan, appointed as the central observer, will oversee the process and is expected to announce the new chief minister at 4 pm.
April 14 is expected to mark the end of Nitish Kumar’s tenure as chief minister. He will chair a final Cabinet meeting at 11 am before submitting his resignation to the Governor at around 3:30 pm.
His exit comes days after he took oath as a Rajya Sabha member, signalling a shift to national politics. The resignation will formally conclude the current government’s term and clear the way for a new NDA-led administration.
A day before the expected resignation, Nitish Kumar carried out what officials describe as his final on-ground review of a key infrastructure project. He made an unannounced visit to inspect the Patna–Betia Expressway in Saran district.
The chief minister reviewed the first phase of the greenfield corridor at the Bakarpur–Manikpur stretch and directed officials to speed up construction. According to officials, the first phase of the project is targeted for completion by April 2027. Once operational, travel time between Patna and Betia is expected to come down to around three hours.
During the visit, Nitish Kumar described the expressway as a crucial connectivity project that will ease movement and reduce congestion on existing routes. The corridor will link Patna with Vaishali, Saran, East Champaran and West Champaran, boosting regional mobility and economic activity across north Bihar.
Several top officials accompanied the chief minister during the inspection. These included senior bureaucrats from the Road Construction Department and district administration, along with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The review is being seen as a symbolic final administrative engagement before his likely resignation, as Bihar prepares for a change in leadership.
The new chief minister will take oath at 11 am on April 15 in Patna. Preparations for the ceremony are underway, with senior officials reviewing security, logistics and crowd management plans.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Patna on the evening of April 14 to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Authorities have been directed to ensure tight security arrangements across key locations.
