Assembly election results 2026: Counting of votes for assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal began at 8 am on Monday, with postal ballots taken up first at counting centres under a three-tier security arrangement.
Simultaneously, counting is also underway for by-elections in Karnataka, Nagaland, Gujarat and Maharashtra, which were necessitated following the death of sitting MLAs last month.
As per early trends available till around 10 am, state-wise positions showed varied leads across parties and alliances, as per ANI.
In the 126-member Assam Assembly, the NDA was leading with 74 seats. The Congress+ alliance was ahead in 28 seats, while AIUDF was leading in 2 seats. Others were ahead in 1 seat. The halfway mark in the state is 64 seats, placing the NDA comfortably ahead in early trends.
In Kerala, which has 140 seats with a majority mark of 71, the UDF was leading in 89 seats. The LDF was ahead in 47 seats, while the NDA was leading in 3 seats. Others were ahead in 1 seat. Early trends indicated a clear lead for the UDF in the state.
In Tamil Nadu, which has a total of 234 seats and a majority mark of 118, TVK was leading in 91 seats. The AIADMK+ alliance was ahead in 67 seats, while the DMK+ alliance was leading in 61 seats. Others were not leading in any seat as per early trends. The contest remained competitive, with no alliance crossing the halfway mark in initial leads.
In the 293-member West Bengal Assembly, where the majority mark is 148, the NDA was leading in 144 seats. The Trinamool Congress was ahead in 105 seats. Others were leading in 4 seats, while Congress+ was ahead in 3 seats. The Left Front was not leading in any seat in early trends. The NDA was close to the majority mark based on initial leads.
In the 30-member Puducherry Assembly, the NDA was leading in 23 seats, crossing the majority mark of 16. Congress+ was ahead in 5 seats, while others were leading in 2 seats. Early trends indicated a clear advantage for the NDA in the Union Territory.
As per early trends at around 10 am across Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the BJP-led NDA was ahead in a total of about 244 seats out of 823 seats combined in these assemblies.
The NDA had crossed the majority mark in Puducherry with 23 out of 30 seats (majority 16) and was comfortably ahead in Assam with 74 out of 126 seats (majority 64).
In West Bengal, the NDA was leading in 144 out of 293 seats, just short of the majority mark of 148. In Kerala, the NDA was ahead in 3 out of 140 seats (majority 71), while in Tamil Nadu, it was not leading as a combined NDA tally in the available trends, with contests spread across other alliances.
Election officials said counting is being conducted under strict security, with multiple layers of checks in place. Postal ballots were counted first, followed by electronic voting machine (EVM) votes in successive rounds.
Officials added that the trends are preliminary and final results will be declared after completion of all counting rounds. Meanwhile, counting for by-elections in Karnataka, Nagaland, Gujarat and Maharashtra is also progressing, though detailed trends from these states were not immediately available.
The counting process is expected to continue through the day, with clearer trends likely to emerge by noon as more rounds are completed.
