Aadhaar lock and unlock feature explained: How to secure Aadhaar biometrics via UIDAI?

The Aadhaar biometric lock and unlock feature allows users to temporarily disable fingerprint, iris and facial authentication linked to their Aadhaar number. Offered by UIDAI through online portals, mobile apps and SMS services, the facility helps prevent fraud and unauthorised use while keeping non-biometric Aadhaar services active.

As Aadhaar finds its way into almost every part of daily life in India - from bank accounts and mobile numbers to pensions, subsidies and digital payments - unease over the possible misuse of biometric data is growing just as fast. Over the past few years, incidents of unauthorised Aadhaar-based transactions, especially through biometric-enabled payment systems, have highlighted how vulnerable fingerprints and iris data can be if they fall into the wrong hands. To address these risks and give citizens greater control over their identity, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers a simple but effective security tool: the Aadhaar biometric lock and unlock feature.

Why Aadhaar biometrics need protection?

Aadhaar authentication largely depends on biometrics such as fingerprints, iris scans and facial recognition. While this has helped speed up service delivery and cut down paperwork, it has also opened the door to new risks. In a number of reported cases, fraudsters have taken advantage of biometric-based systems - cloning fingerprints or misleading people into sharing their biometric details on the pretext of KYC updates or government benefits. Biometric-enabled services such as Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions are particularly sensitive, as they depend entirely on fingerprint authentication. Once biometric data is compromised, it cannot be changed like a password or PIN. This makes preventive measures, rather than post-fraud action, far more important.

What is the Aadhaar biometric lock feature?

Once biometrics are locked, no agency - whether a bank, telecom operator or government department can authenticate the individual using biometric data. In practical terms, even if someone has your Aadhaar number or physical Aadhaar card, they cannot complete biometric verification when the lock is active.

What happens when you lock your Aadhaar biometrics?

Once biometric locking is switched on, services that depend only on biometric authentication stop working for the time being. This includes Aadhaar-enabled payment transactions, biometric e-KYC, SIM verification using fingerprints or iris scans, and some banking or verification services.

Services that rely on basic details or document-based checks - such as PAN–Aadhaar linking or simple identity verification continue as usual. The idea is to tighten security without cutting people off from essential services.

How to lock Aadhaar biometrics?

Locking biometrics is free and takes only a few minutes. All you need is a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.

Visit the UIDAI self-service portal or open the mAadhaar app, enter your Aadhaar number, and verify the request using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Once confirmed, biometric authentication is disabled almost immediately, at no cost.

How to unlock biometrics when needed?

There are times when biometric authentication can’t be avoided at a bank branch, an Aadhaar centre or during certain government verifications. In such cases, biometrics can be unlocked just as easily. Log in to the UIDAI portal or mAadhaar app, authenticate with an OTP, and unlock biometrics for immediate use.

After completing the transaction, biometrics can be locked again. There is no limit on how often users can lock or unlock them.

Aadhaar number lock vs biometric lock

UIDAI offers two security options that are often confused. Aadhaar number locking blocks all forms of authentication biometric, demographic and OTP-based and requires the use of a Virtual ID. Biometric locking, on the other hand, disables only fingerprint, iris and facial authentication, while allowing other Aadhaar services to continue. For most people, biometric locking strikes the right balance between safety and convenience.
