Assembly Elections HIGHLIGHTS: Lotus blooms! PM credits BJP wins in WB, Assam, Puducherry to workers, electors

Assembly Election 2026 Results Highlights: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory to wrest control of the opposition stronghold of West Bengal on May 4, marking the party’s historic breakthrough in the state. West Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee lost her bastion Bhabanipur to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of 15,105 votes.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) bagged a decisive win with a three-fourths majority in the 126-seat Assam Assembly, marking a third straight victory for the alliance in the state – where the BJP clinched its highest-ever tally. The state also marked the Indian National Congress (INC)’s worst performance in the Assembly since losing power to BJP in 2016.

In the 140-seat Kerala Assembly, the Congress-led United Democratic Front alliance bagged a decisive mandate, a significant shift in the state’s political landscape after a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule. The INC won 63 seats and its ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) got 22, while the ruling LDF came down to 35 seats.

In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay's relatively new party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) looked set to form an alliance with 108 seats won. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) bagged 59 seats, while ADMK got 47 and the INC bagged five.

In Puducherry Assembly polls, the ruling NDA won 18 seats, crossing the crucial 16-seat majority mark in the 30-member House. The INDIA bloc won six, while three constituencies went to independents.

What PM Modi said

The Prime Minister described the state election outcomes as a triumph of democracy and the Constitution, stating that voters chose stability and development amid the crisis in West Asia and broader global turmoil. He noted that the power of the people prevailed as his party’s politics of good governance triumphed in West Bengal, describing the NDA’s victory in Assam as the result of its emphasis on development.

He assured the people of West Bengal that the BJP will do everything possible to fulfil their dreams and aspirations.

PM Modi attributed the BJP’s electoral success in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry to voters and lakhs of party workers who fought elections on the ground.

Amit Shah describes BJP’s WB win as a result of workers’ sacrifices

Union Minister Amit Shah described the BJP’s performance in the West Bengal Assembly polls as a “historic win”, attributing it to the sustained efforts of party workers.

Calling the BJP’s rise in the state a reflection of the perseverance and commitment of its grassroots cadre, he said: “This historic victory… is the result of the sacrifices, struggles and dedication of countless workers.”

Assembly Elections 2026 LIVE Update: Factors behind Mamata Banerjee and TMC’s setback in West Bengal

Mamata Banerjee’s defeat in her own stronghold of Bhabhanipur marks a major setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Once seen as an unassailable seat for the party chief, the constituency has delivered a stunning reversal of fortunes, with the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari securing a decisive 15,105-vote victory.

The result comes as part of a broader sweep by the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, signalling what many see as a significant political shift in the state. For Mamata Banerjee, who was seeking a fourth consecutive term, the loss is a sharp blow to her long-standing dominance.

What was once considered a fortress for the TMC has now been breached, prompting speculation about a deeper realignment in West Bengal’s political landscape.

As the party absorbs the shock of the verdict, here are the factors that may have contributed to this unexpected outcome: Mamata Banerjee Loses Bhabanipur: Factors that may have led to TMC setback in West Bengal

  • Regardless of the outcome, Nifty50 is unlikely to move more than 100-200 points
  • If BJP wins, stocks like CESC (Sanjeev Goenka Group) and Dalmia Bharat Group could see positive movement

Assembly Election Results 2026 LIVE: Counting of votes begins in WB, TN, Assam, Kerala, Puducherry

India has kicked off the counting of votes amid tight security in four states and a Union Territory (UT), with the final verdict expected later in the day. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by EVMs. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry went into polls earlier this month, where electors participated heavily to select fresh governments.

West Bengal is expected to take centre stage in the much-anticipated 2026 Assembly polls with most exit polls predicting a tight contest with the BJP having a clear edge over the ruling TMC. The exit polls also project a decisive lead for the ruling BJP in Assam, and a change of regime in Kerala with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) projected to make a comeback.
