<p>US President Donald Trump took to social network Truth Social late on Monday (India time) to say that a long overdue trade deal with India was agreed to. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) to confirm having connected with Trump. Both leaders said that tariffs on Indian goods shipped to the US will be reduced to 18 per cent from the current 25 per cent. Trump wrote that <span>both sides agreed to devise an agreement "</span><span>out of friendship and respect for PM Modi".</span><span> </span></p>
<p>The 47th US president said India will remove its trade barriers for America while stopping its oil imports from Russia, in order to help his administration negotiate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. According to Trump's post, an additional 25 per cent tariff penalty -- slapped on New Delhi for refusing to stop importing oil from Russia -- stood dropped.</p>

<p>In his post, Trump said that during his phone call with PM Modi, both leaders discussed trade and the Russia-Ukraine war. "He (PM Modi) agreed to stop buying Russian oil, and to buy much more oil from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela", wrote the US president. </p>
<p>Trump also hinted at the imminent end to the European war with help from India. The American president also claimed that it was at PM Modi's request that he immediately "agreed to a trade deal". </p>
<h2><strong>India-US trade relations </strong></h2>
<p>India's trade relationship with the US has been strained since the Trump administration imposed a 50 per cent duty on goods imported from India.</p>
<p>That 50 per cent included a 25 per cent levy linked to India's purchase of Russian oil. The US had long criticised India's oil imports from Russia, with India staying firm on its decision to purchase cost-effective oil in order to protect the interest of its population. </p>
