At a White House roundtable with farm-sector stakeholders and top officials, US President Donald Trump recently made strong remarks about a particular import from India. Describing Indian rice imports into the world's largest economy as "dumping", Trump said that India "shouldn't be" allowed to do it unless it pays a tariff, according to foreign media reports. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins were part of the talks.
The roundtable took an unexpected turn when the American president reportedly pressed his team on what he claimed was “India dumping rice” into the US. Questioning India’s trade practices, especially in rice in particular, he asked Bessent: “Tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do that? They have to pay tariffs. Do they have an exemption on rice?”
Bessent clarified, “No sir, we’re still working on their trade deal,” referring to the ongoing trade deal negotiations between the two countries.
Appearing unconvinced, Trump said that India "shouldn’t be dumping". "They can't do that," he reportedly said.
Trump’s remarks about Indian rice come at a time when Washington is reviewing several trade relationships.
Now, here are three data points that contradict the US president's claim:
Data shows that India's biggest rice markets are spread across West Asia, Africa and parts of Southeast Asia.
They are: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Benin and the UAE (across rice types).
India’s rice shipments to the US are under 2,50,000 tonnes, as against its total rice exports of an estimated 20 million tonnes annually, according to export data.
This marks 1.3 per cent of India's rice exports in volume terms.
The lion's share of the rice India ships to the US is 'basmati', a premium, aromatic variety. The US doesn't grow basmati rice, and imports it from India and Pakistan.
India is the world’s largest basmati rice exporter.
For a product to be “dumped” in a foreign market, the exporting country must push cheap supplies into an economy that already produces that item.
