No More Waiting at Toll Plazas: Highway commuters may soon be able to cross toll plazas without stopping as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) moves ahead with the rollout of Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling across the country. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday, May 11, inaugurated the barrier-free MLFF tolling system at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), making it the second such toll plaza in India.

Toll charges are automatically collected through FASTag using advanced FASTag readers, Number Plate Recognition technology and AI-enabled cameras. The system has been designed to ensure zero waiting time and allow vehicles to pass through toll points at speeds of up to 80 kmph.
According to details shared by NHAI at the launch, the authority aims to make all toll plazas across the country barrier-free by the end of the year. The move is expected to reduce congestion, improve travel time and make traffic movement on national highways seamless.
NHAI said the new technology is being implemented by banks under a “Per-Transaction Fee Model”, ensuring that the government incurs no additional capital investment. The authority added that MLFF is not only aimed at improving speed and convenience for commuters, but is also a major cost-saving and efficiency-driven initiative.
The operational cost of toll collection is expected to come down significantly from the existing 12-15 per cent to nearly 3-4 per cent under the MLFF system. Studies cited by NHAI suggest that the system could result in annual fuel savings of around Rs 285 crore and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 81,000 tonnes every year. It is also expected to save millions of travel hours and improve logistics efficiency on highways.
India’s first MLFF Toll Plaza became operational on May 1, 2026, at the Choryasi Toll Plaza on the NH-48 Surat-Bharuch section. According to NHAI, the Choryasi plaza has already recorded 2-3 per cent higher toll collection compared to the traditional barrier-based tolling system.
Apart from Choryasi and Mundka-Bakkarwala, nearly 17 toll plazas are currently under implementation. Tenders have also been invited for 108 public-funded toll plazas in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Discussions are underway to include existing BOT, TOT and InvIT toll plazas under the MLFF network as well.
NHAI has advised highway users to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts and ensure annual or discount passes remain active. Vehicles with invalid or non-functional FASTags will receive e-Notices. Users paying within 72 hours of receiving the notice will only need to pay the actual toll amount, while payments made after 72 hours will attract double toll charges.
