NHAI Tightens FASTag Rules: To enhance the accuracy and reliability of data in the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, the government has taken a significant step to streamline the tolling system. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) directed all FASTag-issuing banks on Wednesday, April 15, to conduct instant verification of Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags issued by them.
The decision comes after complaints of mismatches between the vehicle number captured by FASTag readers and the actual number plate of vehicles, raising concerns over data accuracy and potential misuse in the tolling system.
According to the latest directive, all FASTag issuer banks have been asked to carry out urgent validation of VRNs linked to FASTags issued by them. The step is aimed at ensuring that the number registered in the system correctly matches the vehicle’s actual registration number.
Officials noted that "such discrepancies have the potential to undermine enforcement mechanisms and may lead to evasion of Government revenue and also attract other penal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988."
NHAI has observed that a large number of mismatches are linked to FASTags issued before the system was integrated with the VAHAN database. During that period, verification processes were largely manual, which sometimes resulted in errors in vehicle records.
With digitisation now fully in place, authorities are focusing on cleaning up legacy data to ensure consistency and accuracy across the FASTag ecosystem.
As part of the new enforcement push, FASTags found to be linked with incorrect or invalid VRNs will be blacklisted by issuing banks, in line with government guidelines. Banks have also been instructed to correct errors in older FASTag records wherever discrepancies are found.
NHAI has also stressed that accurate vehicle identification will play a key role in upcoming technology-driven initiatives such as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. Under this system, vehicles will be charged automatically without stopping at toll plazas, making correct data mapping even more important.
"Under the MLFF framework, enforcement actions including issuance of electronic notices (e-Notices) to non-compliant vehicles will significantly depend on accurate and verified vehicle identification data," it said.
In such a setup, enforcement actions like electronic notices for non-compliant vehicles will depend entirely on verified vehicle data.
The authority said the ongoing efforts to strengthen data accuracy will improve transparency, reduce misuse of FASTag, and enhance the overall efficiency of toll operations across the country.
For commuters
- Unnecessary stoppages and hassles at toll plazas will be reduced
- Multi-lane free-flow tolling will work more smoothly in the future
- Toll evasion and fraud will be reduced, saving the government money and improving roads
- Travelling on highways will become more convenient and less hassle
| Key Aspect | What NHAI Has Said | What It Means for You |
| Vehicle Number Verification (VRN) | Banks must verify FASTag-linked vehicle numbers immediately | Ensures your FASTag matches your actual vehicle |
| Mismatch Issues | Complaints of mismatched numbers flagged | Reduces errors and misuse in the system |
| Action on Wrong FASTags | Incorrect or fake VRNs will lead to blacklisting | Wrong details can get your FASTag blocked |
| Old FASTags | Older FASTags (pre-VAHAN integration) to be rechecked | Errors in old tags will be corrected |
| Data Accuracy | Focus on improving system-wide data integrity | More reliable toll deductions and records |
| MLFF Tolling Future | Accurate data needed for barrier-free tolling system | Smoother, no-stop toll experience in future |
| Impact on Users | Better transparency and efficiency | Less hassle, fewer disputes at toll plazas |
| Government Benefit | Helps prevent revenue leakage | Better road infrastructure through proper toll collection |
