Radiowaves attract Rs 11,340 crore bids after six rounds in mega spectrum auction

10th Telecom Spectrum Auction: A mega auction for mobile radiowaves ended on Wednesday with bids of Rs 11,340 crore, after six rounds of bidding in a process initiated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) the previous day to bolster the country's telecom infrastructure. The country's 10th spectrum auction - since the sale of radiowaves began through an online bidding process in 2010 - was in line with the government's commitment to facilitating affordable, state-of-art high quality telecom services to the citizens. The 2024 telecom spectrum auction, poised to reshape the country's telecom landscape, included bands essential for 5G services, with a total of 10,522.35 MHz across bands ranging from 800 MHz to 26 GHz going under the hammer. The auction involved eight spectrum bands: 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz.

The last spectrum auction in India was held in August 2022, wherein radiowaves for 5G services were included in a first.
