State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corp Ltd (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petrol Corp Ltd (HPCL) have urged the public against purchasing petrol and diesel in a hurry. All three dismissed what they described as rumours about fuel shortages in the country. The development comes at a time when the central government has stated that India continues to be in a comfortable situation when it comes to oil supplies, with adequate quantities of petrol and diesel in its reserves. Globally, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz -- a crucial waterway that one-fifth of the global oil and gas supplies flows through -- have impacted energy benchmarks, fuelling fears about a significant surge in oil rates that could potentially aggravate inflation and hamper economic growth. 
Authorities have also said that the disruptions emanating from the Strait of Hormuz are being closely monitored.

Amid growing concerns over fuel supplies following escalating tensions in West Asia, IOCL dismissed reports circulating on social media about a shortage of petrol and diesel in the country as baseless, urging citizens not to panic or crowd fuel stations.

"Rumors of petrol and diesel shortages are completely unfounded. India has ample fuel reserves and supply chains are running normally. "Please don't rely on rumours or crowd fuel stations and only rely on official sources for further information," added BPCL. 
HPCL stated that supplies remain normal amid misleading messages about fuel shortages circulating in some areas.
"HPCL remains fully operational and is committed to ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability for all customers through its nationwide retail network. Citizens are requested not to panic or rush to fuel stations and to rely only on official sources for accurate information," its post said.
The assurances from the three PSU OMCs come at a time when global energy markets are reeling under pressure due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. 
Government sources have told Zee Business that the country remains in a comfortable position with adequate stocks of crude oil, petroleum products and LPG, ensuring that domestic fuel supply is not at immediate risk. Authorities are reportedly monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz. 
In the event of any disruption in the region, India is prepared to increase crude purchases from alternative suppliers and routes to maintain uninterrupted energy supplies.
These advisories come a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the 30-day waiver allowing India to purchase Russian oil to enable oil flow into the global market. 
Bessent announced a short-term measure to counter Iran during the conflict in West Asia, which has severely affected the Gulf countries supplying crude oil.
India sources nearly 40 per cent of its oil imports from the region.
