The revised prices came into effect immediately.

In Delhi, petrol prices were raised by Rs 3 per litre to Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel prices increased to Rs 90.67 per litre. The latest revision comes as oil retailers moved to offset higher international energy costs.

Fuel inflation rises sharply

The latest price hike comes after a sharp rise in wholesale fuel inflation in April.

Government data released on Thursday showed that petrol inflation surged to 32.4 per cent from 2.50 per cent in the previous month. Inflation in high-speed diesel also accelerated sharply to 25.19 per cent from 3.62 per cent earlier.

The rise was mainly driven by higher prices of crude petroleum, natural gas, petrol, diesel and LPG.

Crude oil stays above $100 per barrel

Global crude oil prices have remained elevated due to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict that began on February 28.

Brent crude prices have stayed around or above the $100 per barrel mark amid concerns over instability in the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainty over a lasting ceasefire in the region.

Oil companies under pressure

Before the latest increase in retail fuel prices, oil marketing companies had raised the prices of premium petrol and diesel in March.

State-run fuel retailers — Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation — had earlier revised premium fuel prices amid rising pressure from elevated global crude oil costs.
