Google on Tuesday, October 14, announced an investment of $15 billion to establish a gigawatt-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh - the company's largest AI facility outside the United States. The announcement was made during the 'Bharat AI Shakti' event in New Delhi.

Major push for India's AI and digital ecosystem

Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive of Google Cloud, said the Visakhapatnam hub would make India a central player in global AI innovation. "This gigawatt-scale AI hub will house data locally and help power AI-driven solutions across sectors," Kurian said. He added that the investment underscores Google's long-term commitment to India's digital growth and the creation of sustainable, locally integrated data infrastructure. The facility will serve as a major centre for computing and AI research, supporting India's ambition to lead the global AI revolution.

Developed in partnership with Adani

Adani Enterprises, through its joint venture AdaniConneX, will partner with Google to build the massive data centre campus in Visakhapatnam. According to a statement from Adani, the project will be developed over five years, from 2026 to 2030, and will include gigawatt-scale data centre operations powered entirely by renewable energy and connected through a strong subsea cable network.

The campus will support advanced AI workloads, neural network training and data-intensive research, forming the backbone of India's AI-driven economy. Airtel will also collaborate on the project by strengthening the network and connectivity infrastructure.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani described the collaboration as a "defining moment for India's digital future". He said, "This is more than an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in the soul of a rising nation. Visakhapatnam is now set to become a global destination for technology and innovation."

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hailed the partnership as a "reflection of harmony between progressive policymaking and dynamic governance". She said the collaboration demonstrates India's readiness to lead the next wave of digital transformation.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who attended the event, called the partnership a "transformational step" for India. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi was clear that Google has to come to India for this. We brought Microsoft to Hyderabad earlier, and today, Google is coming to Visakhapatnam. This will help realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 through AI," Naidu said. State IT Minister Nara Lokesh added that the collaboration between the central and state governments highlights India's ability to lead from the front. "What you see today is India at its best - united in building the future," he said.

According to official estimates, the initiative is expected to create up to 1.8 lakh direct and indirect jobs across technology, clean energy and construction sectors, while strengthening the state's energy infrastructure.
