Delhi-NCR commuters may soon spend less time stuck in traffic as the Centre pushes ahead with a massive road and mobility expansion plan worth nearly Rs 1.5 lakh crore across the region. The mega infrastructure push includes new expressways, ring roads, tunnels, elevated corridors and airport connectivity projects aimed at easing congestion and improving daily travel across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and nearby cities.
The government says the long-term vision is not limited to building roads and flyovers. The broader goal is to create a modern, future-ready and seamless transport network that can improve mobility, reduce pollution, save fuel and support economic growth across the NCR region.
According to the plan, around 1,850 km of road projects worth nearly Rs 87,000 crore have already been completed across Delhi-NCR. Another 225 km of projects worth around Rs 13,000 crore are under construction, while upcoming projects covering about 190 km are expected to attract investments of more than Rs 34,500 crore. The key objectives behind the projects include:
Several large infrastructure projects have already started changing traffic movement in and around the national capital.
The 30-km Dwarka Expressway, built at a cost of around Rs 8,700 crore, has become one of the most important urban connectivity projects between Delhi and Gurugram. The expressway has improved access between Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, Najafgarh and the Indira Gandhi International Airport area.
The 97-km Delhi-Meerut Expressway has significantly reduced travel time between Delhi and Meerut. What earlier took nearly two-and-a-half hours can now be completed in around 45 minutes.
The 76-km Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) is expected to become a major decongestion corridor for Delhi. The project strengthens connectivity across Najafgarh, Mundka, Bawana and Alipur. Commute times on several stretches are expected to reduce from nearly two hours to around 30 minutes.
Among the biggest upcoming projects is the Shiv Murti–Nelson Mandela Marg Tunnel, a proposed 8-km underground corridor worth around Rs 7,000 crore. The tunnel aims to provide signal-free connectivity from Dwarka Expressway towards Vasant Kunj and South Delhi.
The project is expected to reduce congestion at Mahipalpur, Rangpuri and Dhaula Kuan — some of Delhi’s busiest traffic bottlenecks — while improving airport access from Gurugram.
Another major proposal is the AIIMS–Mahipalpur–Gurugram Elevated Corridor. The 20-km elevated road project will connect AIIMS, INA, Hauz Khas, Vasant Kunj, Mahipalpur and Gurugram through a signal-free route. The corridor is expected to reduce pressure on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and improve movement towards Noida and Ghaziabad as well.
A major greenfield connectivity project is also being developed between Noida International Airport at Jewar and Delhi’s IGI Airport. The proposed 32-km corridor, being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 3,700 crore, will improve connectivity between Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad, Dwarka Expressway and the two airports.
The project is expected to reduce traffic pressure at Dhaula Kuan and improve regional airport access for NCR residents.
The government is also planning several new connectivity corridors linking Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Delhi-Katra Expressway and key NCR routes. These include:
Officials believe these projects will help reduce congestion on Kalindi Kunj, Sarai Kale Khan, Outer Ring Road and other heavily crowded corridors across NCR.
Apart from improving travel speed, the projects are expected to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions by cutting traffic bottlenecks and idling time.
The government says the broader goal is to make Delhi-NCR a world-class mobility network with greener and more sustainable transportation infrastructure in the coming years.
