The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has said that under-recoveries on domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and domestic aviation turbine fuel (ATF) continue to remain significant, putting financial pressure on oil marketing companies (OMCs).

Rs 650 Loss Per LPG Cylinder

Speaking during the weekly press conference, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sujata Sharma, said the current under-recovery on domestic LPG stands at Rs 650 per cylinder.

Rs 30 Loss Per Litre on Domestic ATF

She also stated that the under-recovery on domestic ATF is Rs 30 per litre.

What does it mean?

This means that whenever a domestic LPG cylinder is sold, oil companies are not able to recover the full cost and have to incur a loss of Rs 650. Similarly, companies are not able to recover the full cost of aviation fuel sold in India and are incurring a loss of Rs 30 per litre.

Fuel Sold Below Cost

According to the ministry, the losses persist because both domestic LPG and domestic ATF are being sold at prices lower than their actual cost.

Burden on Oil Marketing Companies

As a result, the burden of these under-recoveries is being borne by oil marketing companies, which continue to supply the fuels despite the gap between cost and selling prices.

Details Shared in Weekly Briefing

The ministry shared the figures during its weekly media briefing, highlighting the ongoing financial impact of subsidised fuel sales on OMCs.

Government Focus on Fuel Security and Strategic Reserves

Earlier on Friday, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said the government is working to strengthen fuel security through strategic reserves and ensure uninterrupted supply, while also continuing to take steps against hoarding.

"Regarding strategic reserves, we are working on the strategic reserves also. And we have asked the oil marketing companies to work out that the LPG reserve that should be minimum 30 days with them and they are working on it. And similarly, for crude also, we are working," Sharma said, during an inter-ministerial briefing. She also outlined the precautionary measures to safeguard against supply shocks.

Domestic LPG Prices Remain Unchanged

However, there was some respite for households as the three PSU OMCs -- Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) -- kept the domestic-use cooking gas refill prices steady at existing levels.
