In a rare incident, two passenger aircraft collided with each other on the ground at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital on Thursday. One aircraft was taxiing when it hit another carrier that was stationary at the time of the incident. Authorities confirmed that passengers and crew were safely disembarked.
An investigation was underway at the time of publishing this report, officials said.
One of the winglets of a SpiceJet B-737-700 VT-SLB aircraft, taxiing in the allocated parking bay, hit the horizontal tail surface (HTS) of an Akasa B-737 aircraft positioned on the apron, according to aviation regulator DGCA.
The incident occurred at Terminal 1 of the airport.
The Akasa aircraft had completed pushback for operating a flight from the national capital to Hyderabad. Pushback is a procedure wherein a specialised tractor or tug moves an aircraft backward from the gate. This is necessary because aircraft cannot move in reverse safely on their own.
The SpiceJet aircraft, which had completed flight SG-124 from Leh to Delhi, was at the airport when the accident happened.
The impact damaged the right-hand winglet of the SpiceJet aircraft and the horizontal tail surface of the Akasa aircraft.
"A SpiceJet B737-700 aircraft was involved in a ground occurrence while taxiing at Delhi airport, resulting in damage to its right winglet and the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of another aircraft belonging to a different airline. The SpiceJet aircraft has been grounded at Delhi," said a SpiceJet spokesperson.
“Akasa Air’s aircraft operating flight QP 1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad had to return to the bay on April 16, 2026. Preliminary information indicates that Akasa’s aircraft was stationary when another airline’s aircraft made contact with it," said an Akasa Air spokesperson.
"All passengers and crew were safely disembarked, and our ground teams are making alternative arrangements to fly our passengers to Hyderabad at the earliest. In line with established protocols, the relevant authorities have been informed, and the matter is under investigation. At Akasa Air, the safety and security of our passengers and crew remain our highest priority," the spokesperson added.
