IndiGo on Thursday, December 11, announced a compensation package for passengers who faced the worst of its major operational meltdown earlier this month, acknowledging that several flyers were left stranded for hours between 3 and 5 December as congestion triggered a wave of cancellations and delays across key airports. India’s largest airline said it has already initiated refunds for all cancelled flights and will now issue Rs 10,000 travel vouchers to those who endured the most severe disruption — a gesture over and above the payouts mandated under existing government rules.

IndiGo said that the bulk of refunds for cancelled services have already been processed, including tickets booked through travel partners. For the remaining cases, the airline expects the amount to reflect in customers’ accounts shortly.

The carrier admitted that “a number of passengers” were forced to spend long hours inside terminals as the airline struggled to manage the cascading impact of the disruptions. To compensate, IndiGo will offer Rs 10,000 travel vouchers, redeemable on any IndiGo flight for the next 12 months.

This is in addition to the compensation mandated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which requires airlines to pay Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for flights cancelled within 24 hours of departure, depending on block time.

How to claim the voucher?

Passengers whose journeys were severely disrupted will receive communication directly from IndiGo. However, those who booked via third-party travel platforms and whose details may not be fully available in IndiGo’s system have been advised to email: customer.experience@goindigo.in

The airline has requested such customers to share booking details so that support teams can verify eligibility and issue the refund or voucher without delay.

Airline promises safeguards after disruption

IndiGo said operations have stabilised since 9 December, with the network now fully connected. The airline has been operating around 1,900 flights a day with minimal cancellations. The chairman has also confirmed that external technical experts will work with the management to identify the root causes of the early-December disruption and recommend safeguards to ensure such large-scale failures are not repeated.
