IndiGo cancelled more than 1,000 flights on Friday, which is more than half its daily operations, as the airline continued to grapple with a severe operational meltdown that has stranded thousands of passengers across major airports.
In a video message, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers apologised for the “major inconvenience” and said the disruptions had aggravated despite earlier efforts to stabilise schedules. “Regrettably, earlier measures of the last few days have proven not to be enough. So we decided today for a reboot of all our systems and schedules, resulting in the highest number of cancellations so far,” he said.

<h2>Cancellations to fall below 1,000: CEO</h2>
Elbers added that the airline expects cancellations to fall below 1,000 on Saturday and anticipates a complete return to normal operations between December 10 and 15. He acknowledged that the crisis had “shaken customer belief” in IndiGo’s reliability.
According to him, the airline is now working on three fronts: improving customer communication, clearing stranded passengers from major hubs, and realigning crew and aircraft to reset operations from Saturday morning. Passengers were urged not to visit airports if their flights had already been cancelled.

<h2>Govt orders high-level inquiry</h2>
As chaotic scenes unfolded at airports, including Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, passengers reported missed weddings, funerals and time-sensitive travel commitments, along with long delays and poor on-ground support. The Centre on Friday announced a high-level inquiry to determine what went wrong at the airline, fix accountability and recommend measures to prevent a repeat of such a disruption.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said flight schedules are expected to begin stabilising on Saturday, with complete restoration expected within three days. He directed airlines to strengthen real-time updates and notify passengers proactively.
“In case of any flight cancellations, the airlines will issue full refunds automatically, without the need for passengers to make any requests,” the minister said. He added that passengers stranded due to prolonged delays must be provided hotel accommodation by the airline.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also set up a 24×7 control room to monitor the situation, coordinate corrective action and ensure faster grievance resolution. Naidu said the DGCA’s FDTL orders have been placed in abeyance in the interest of passengers, especially senior citizens, students and patients, without compromising air safety.
