Two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots sustained fatal injuries in a plane crash involving a Su-30 aircraft in Assam on Thursday.  
The IAF acknowledged the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar.

<h2>What happened to the Su-30 MKI aircraft?</h2>
The IAF had begun a "search and rescue" mission on Thursday after the aircraft went missing. 
The said aircraft took off from Jorhat, Assam, and was last in contact at 7:42 pm, said the IAF on Thursday.  
"Further details are being ascertained. Search and Rescue mission has been initiated," added the Indian Air Force.
<h2>What does it mean 'aircraft is overdue'?</h2>
It means that a fighter jet of the Indian Air Force has not returned at its expected time and contact with it has been lost.
In other words, when an aircraft is described as “overdue”, it means that it was expected to either land at its base or establish communication with air traffic control at a particular time, but it has not done so yet.
<h2>What happened to the missing Su-30 MKI?</h2>
In this particular case, the fighter jet lost contact with radar and communication systems, which means ground controllers can no longer track its position through normal monitoring systems.
Because the aircraft’s exact location has not been confirmed, the Air Force usually treats such situations as a potential emergency until the aircraft or crew are located.
When this happens, the Air Force typically activates a search and rescue operation, deploying helicopters, aircraft and ground teams to scan the last known location or possible flight path of the missing jet.
The aim is to quickly establish contact, locate the aircraft and ensure the safety of the pilot and the aircraft.
However, an aircraft being “overdue” does not always mean a crash.
Sometimes, it can be caused by communication failure, technical glitches, weather disruptions or diversion to another airbase.
