The Central Government has approved key procurement and support measures aimed at providing relief to farmers across Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring remunerative prices and protecting farmers from distress sales.
The decisions were taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who said the government remains fully committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests and strengthening rural incomes.
Under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025–26 marketing year, the Centre has approved the procurement of 20 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of potatoes in Uttar Pradesh.
The procurement will be carried out at a market intervention price of Rs 6,500.9 per metric tonne. The Government of India’s estimated financial share for this intervention stands at Rs 203.15 crore.
Officials said the move is expected to provide significant relief to potato farmers in Uttar Pradesh by ensuring better price realisation and preventing distress selling during periods of market price volatility.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has approved an increase in the procurement limit of chickpea (Bengal gram) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
Initially approved for 94,500 metric tonnes, the procurement ceiling has now been raised to 1,13,250 metric tonnes for the 2025–26 rabi season. The decision was taken following a request from the state government.
This decision will provide major relief to chickpea-producing farmers in the state, ensure remunerative prices, and protect them from distress sales.
For the upcoming kharif crop cycle of 2025-26, the Central government has increased the procurement period for tur in Karnataka within the framework of the Price Support Scheme.
This has been done by extending the period of procurement by 30 days, and now the farmers will have the benefit of selling their output at MSP till May 15, 2026.
Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government is working in close coordination with states to ensure timely and effective procurement interventions.
“These decisions reflect our commitment to ensuring farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce and are not forced into distress sales,” he said.
The government added that such coordinated interventions across states will help stabilise agricultural markets and strengthen rural economic resilience under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
