Snehaal Dhruve, Founder & CEO, SuperFan Studio, talks about the business model of his company, strategy and opportunities to grow and competition during a candid chat with Swati Khandelwal, Zee Business. Edited Excerpts:
First of all, I would like to learn about your business model as we have been hearing about a number of buzz words like artificial intelligence and virtual reality and I think you have expertise in the same area. How these things are being adopted in our daily lives and what is your outlook on its expansion in the post COVID world?
Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are different terms that are being used by people. We are a digital reality studio where we enable brands of businesses for the usage of the upcoming new technologies. Its usage may vary to attract customers and engage with them. You need to engage with the customer and they need value for it and eventually, it will lead to conversion as well. That is what the entire platform enables. I would like to answer it in two parts (i) pre-COVID – where we were a digital reality studio, where we used to have discussions with each customer about what we will do and enabled solutions in accordingly. (ii) During and post-COVID – we have turned into a platform where you can try AR and VR technologies. You can start it as low as Rs 3,000 to begin and enable it to use. For instance, education, conversation, and business everything is virtual today and people are doing business via Zoom Calls. How do you make it personal and that is the solution on which we are working? We have companies like One Plus to launch a phone during this time and if you go to its social and see un-boxing of the product for which you used to visit the showrooms but you can make it live at your home. Basically, we provide solutions to many companies - who are our partners like Facebook and Snapchat – to the consumers for better usage.

What growth opportunities are available to you and are other companies reaching you to customize their needs? You have said that it is just not restricted to entertainment and it is going beyond to basic education and meetings. So, how you will explore it more and how big is your set up and what are your expansion plans?
Pre-COVID business-wise we were around Rs 2-3 crore like a yearly business but what we are projecting to at least grow 10X to 15X (10 times to 15 times) from where we are. It is so because people are doing everything through Zoom Calls and they want to turn it interesting and they need a solution for the purpose. Earlier, we were in a practice of reaching to the customers but now customers are coming to us and saying that we have seen your meeting and it was interesting. How can we have our brand visibility as part of the meetings that we do in where there is set-up but is not an office set-up and seems personal. So, this is one medium. It seems that there is a huge buzz in education in which the teachers are now realizing that they can teach everywhere by just seating at the home. There is a change in the way of looking at things thus backdrops are definitely helping. We also work with many influencers in different sectors who go live every day and they need newer and newer things for the purpose. From the model perspective, we provide the end solution. We are a team of 100 creators and this helps us in quality control and other aspects in advance. We don’t go on bidding and say if you need good work then come on the platform and pay a certain amount. You will get the best work and you will not have to worry about the end creator, as SuperFan studio guaranteed the end results. We have evolved this model and we are seeing like a boom in that setup and the recent example is that Microsoft was reality-based four days ago where you can meet people in virtual reality. Even for me, it was the first time when I went fully immersed in that and was meeting with people from Europe and South America in my 3D Avtaar. We also connected offline on LinkedIn and we did some business. That’s how technology is evolving. It is not about where you are but it is about where you can reach virtually and create a physical setup. So, new terms, physical reality and digital reality are emerging and are new technologies in the market.

Do you have any important competitor/s in the market at present in India as well as a global market? Also, tell how you will keep the cost-effective to pull people towards you, as this area will evolve at a constant pace?
We have a philosophy, ‘Think Global and Be Local’. I think, being local helps us in keeping the costs down and to support. We charge anywhere from 20-30% to do a task of what is charged internationally. So, businesses are looking to save money in today’s day. So, I think that is the key value. At the same time, there is a need to maintain the quality i.e. it is not like that do 5% of the original value and try to gain customers but there is a need to maintain that value and I think that is our USP. In India, we don’t have a platform who is a direct competitor but of course, there are individual agencies like we were who work in this space. Internationally, there are two-three companies who have started understanding the market and are growing. But the advantage, we have is having 100 creators and that enable us to do 3-4 lakhs on average experiences a month. The scale is different. Of course, the behind technologies are being improved by using AI making it accessible for the local market with the data problems with which go through as well making sure that it is successful on lighter devices. Besides, there are platforms like Facebook and Snapchat, who are constantly innovating such things and we have partnered with them and making showcase solutions and we strongly align with them.
