The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notice to Blinkit and sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 24 hours after a customer reportedly fell ill following the consumption of curd purchased through the quick commerce platform.
The food regulator has also flagged multiple complaints related to the delivery of spoiled, unhygienic and damaged food products through the platform. According to sources, several of these complaints were received directly from consumers, while others surfaced on social media.
The action follows a consumer complaint alleging illness after consuming curd ordered through Blinkit. Taking note of the complaint, FSSAI sought an explanation from the company and asked it to submit details of the steps taken in response to the incident.
While the regulator has not publicly disclosed the identity of the customer or the exact nature of the illness, it has treated the matter as serious enough to warrant immediate intervention.
In its notice, FSSAI stated that the reported incident, along with other complaints received against the platform, raises concerns regarding compliance with food safety regulations.
The regulator noted that food business operators are required to ensure that food products supplied to consumers are safe, hygienic and fit for consumption.
According to FSSAI, the complaints point to potential violations of responsibilities prescribed under Sections 26 and 27 of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Section 26 prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution or sale of unsafe food, while Section 27 outlines the liabilities and responsibilities of food business operators and sellers in the supply chain.
Sources said FSSAI has received several representations concerning allegedly spoiled, unhygienic or damaged food products delivered through the platform.
The authority is examining these complaints as part of its broader review of compliance standards in the fast-growing quick commerce sector, where groceries and food products are delivered within minutes of being ordered.
The regulator has sought a comprehensive compliance report from Blinkit detailing the measures taken to address consumer grievances and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Blinkit has been asked to submit its Action Taken Report within 24 hours. The report is expected to include details of the company's investigation into the complaint, corrective actions taken and measures implemented to strengthen food safety controls.
Failure to provide a satisfactory response could invite further regulatory scrutiny or action under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The development highlights the increasing attention being paid to food quality and safety in India's rapidly expanding quick commerce industry. As platforms compete to deliver groceries and food products in record time, regulators are emphasising that speed cannot come at the cost of consumer safety.
