India’s largest airline, InterGlobe Aviation, on Wednesday said it will revise fuel surcharge on tickets starting April 2, following a steep rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
The airline will now levy fuel charges ranging from Rs 275 to Rs 10,000 across domestic and international routes, depending on distance.
With this move, international airfares are expected to inch higher across multiple routes, with some relief on domestic flights.
For domestic flights, the revised fuel surcharge will range between Rs 275 and Rs 950 based on the sector length. In the case of international routes, passengers may have to pay anywhere between Rs 900 and Rs 10,000 as fuel surcharge.
The revision comes on the same day as the latest change in ATF prices, where the government allowed only a partial increase of around 25 per cent for domestic flights.
IndiGo said it has recalibrated its domestic fuel charges based on travel distance, aligning pricing with the current fuel cost environment.
The airline had already introduced fuel charges from March 14, ranging between Rs 425 and Rs 2,300, after jet fuel prices surged amid the West Asia conflict.
With the latest revision, the structure has been adjusted again to reflect ongoing cost pressures.
According to the airline, ATF prices for international operations have more than doubled over the past month, significantly increasing operating costs on these routes.
One of the biggest cost components for airlines is fuel , and such sharp increases are likely to directly impact pricing decisions.
IndiGo said it has passed on only a part of the increased cost burden to customers. Fully offsetting the rise in fuel prices would have required a much sharper increase in fares, the airline added.
The revised charges will come into effect from 12:01 AM on April 2.
