Auto Sales May 2026 Highlights: Passenger vehicles continued to see robust demand in the country's automotive market, with most players beating analysts' estimates of monthly sales. Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) registered double-digit percentage growth in total sales in May 2026. Hyundai Motor India's monthly sales grew in mid-single digits, falling short of estimates.

The four together hold a market share of around 78 per cent in the country's PV market, where Maruti Suzuki India dominates with the lion's share. Here's a lowdown on the monthly sales figures from major players:

Maruti Suzuki India beats estimates with nearly 35% jump in May sales

New Delhi-headquartered Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) -- the country's largest carmaker -- on Monday June 1, reported a 34.8 per cent jump in total sales to 2,42,688 units in May, comprising domestic sales and exports. According to Zee Business research, Maruti Suzuki was estimated to report total sales of 2,25,000 units in May 2026.

In the domestic market, MSI sold 2,00,774 vehicles, a 34.9 per cent rise over the year-ago period.

Out of those, PV sales in the domestic market jumped 40 per cent on a year-on-year basis to 1,90,337 units. The auto giant's exports increased 34.3 per cent to 41,914 units.

In the utility vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki logged a 44.4 per cent jump in sales to 79,267 units. It had sold 54,899 UVs during the year-ago period.

Maruti Suzuki's UV segment comprises its Brezza, Ertiga, e-Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6 models.

In the compact and mid-size category -- comprising Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, Maruti Suzuki witnessed a 31.6 per cent jump to 81,555 units sold in May.

In its mini segment, comprising Alto and S-Presso, Maruti registered sales of 16,275 units during the month, up 2.4 times over the year-ago period.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles meets mark

Tata Motors also registered better-than-expected monthly sales in the passenger vehicle segment. Its total PV sales -- including EVs -- jumped 42.2 per cent to 59,090 units sold in May. Analysts had pegged its monthly sales at 56,700 units.

In the domestic market, the Tata group auto giant's PV sales grew by the same pace as total sales. It sold 59,090 PVs in the domestic market, as against 41,557 units sold a year ago.

Monthly exports surged to 700 units from 483 units a year ago.

The company's EV segment witnessed a robust surge in demand, with 10,517 units sold -- both in domestic and foreign markets. That marked a year-on-year jump of 85 per cent.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) tops estimates

Mahindra & Mahindra's total sales expanded 18.5 per cent to 99,636 units, beating Street estimates. Analysts had pegged the monthly tally at 97,000 units.

PV sales in the domestic market grew 10.7 per cent to 58,021 units.

M&M's exports jumped by over one-third to 5,000 units during the month.

Hyundai Motor India misses mark

Hyundai Motor India's total sales grew 4.1 per cent to 61,137 units in May.

Its domestic sales rose 9.1 per cent to 47,837 units in May. Its monthly exports fell 10.4 per cent to 13,300 units.

Analysts had pegged the auto maker's total sales for the month at 63,000 units.
