Shantanu Narayen will vacate his role as chief executive of Adobe after leading the company since December 2007. The announcement comes at a time when investors are raising concerns about Adobe’s position amid rapid developments in artificial intelligence.

Narayen informed Adobe employees about his decision in a statement.

“This is not a goodbye by any means but a time for reflection,” he said.

The leadership change comes as Adobe faces questions about its long-term strategy in the era of artificial intelligence. AI image-generation tools such as Google Nano Banana have made it easier for users to edit images without needing apps such as Adobe Photoshop.

At the same time, Adobe has been working on its own AI products such as Adobe Firefly. According to the company, it has seen rapid adoption of its AI-first products, with annual recurring revenue from offerings like Firefly more than tripling over the previous year.

Narayen said the company remains focused on the future of creativity driven by AI.

“The next era of creativity is being written right now—shaped by AI, by new workflows and by entirely new forms of expression,” he said.

Shantanu Narayen’s role at Adobe

Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as vice president and general manager of the company’s engineering technology group. He was promoted to president and chief operating officer in 2005 and became CEO in 2007. He was named chairman of the board in 2017.

Before joining Adobe, he held product development roles at Apple and Silicon Graphics. He also co-founded a photo-sharing startup called Pictra.

According to Adobe’s website, Narayen holds five patents. He has a master’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California at Berkeley. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Osmania University.

Growth under Narayen’s leadership

During Narayen’s tenure, Adobe expanded from roughly 3,000 employees to more than 30,000. The company’s revenue also rose from less than $1 billion to more than $25 billion.

Adobe’s creative suite became widely used by creators around the world. Applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro became key tools for creative professionals.

Narayen’s exit from the role comes after he served as the head of Adobe for 18 years, during which the company’s flagship software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and InDesign became widely used creative products.

Investor concerns and share price decline

The announcement comes as worries grow about the rise of automated AI tools and agents that some believe could disrupt traditional software subscription models and offer quicker and cheaper ways of creating content.

While Adobe has invested heavily in artificial intelligence to strengthen its product suite, investor skepticism about the timing and payoff of monetization has also been cited as a factor behind the company’s share price decline.

Adobe’s shares have fallen around 22 per cent so far this year after declining more than 21 per cent in 2025, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s AI strategy and outlook.

The company forecast second-quarter revenue between $6.43 billion and $6.48 billion, compared with estimates of $6.43 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Adobe reported first-quarter revenue of $6.40 billion, beating estimates of $6.28 billion.

Following the announcement, Satya Nadella shared a message on X praising Narayen’s leadership.

“Congrats Shantanu, on a legendary run at Adobe! You’ve built one of the most important software companies in the world, and expanded what’s possible for creators, entrepreneurs, and brands everywhere,” Nadella wrote.

The Microsoft chief added that Narayen was more than an industry peer and often acted as his mentor.

“Grateful for your friendship, mentorship, and for all you’ve done for Adobe and for our industry,” he said.
