Notification on E20
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway has issued a notification saying that it has approved blending of 20 per cent ethanol with 80 per cent gasoline. The Ministry has also issued mass emission standard for the same.
The target of 20 per cent ethanol blending is to be achieved by 2025. The earlier target to achieve this was till 2030. Source: PTI
Use of E20 for two-wheeler and four wheelers
The Ministry has said that E20 fuel is good for the environment. This is because the blended fuel will have a lesser amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The car and bike manufacturers will be required to tell which vehicle is suitable for E20 fuel. The vehicle will also beat a sticker of this. Source: PTI
Blending as of now
You must know that in 2014, less than 1 per cent of ethanol was blended into petrol which was later increased to 8.5 per cent. The target is now to blend 10 per cent ethanol. There are various benefits of blending ethanol in fuel. Source: PTI
Benefits of E20 Fuel - Price and Pollution
One of the biggest benefits will be that the import of fuel will come down. This means that country’s reliance of crude oil import will come down. The country is currently meeting 83 per cent of its requirements through the imports.

Other Benefits
The farmers are also likely to benefit from the ethanol blending as ethanol is produced from sugarcane, corn and other sources.
The sugar mills will also have an additional means to increase its revenues.
