The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a new regulatory framework for app-based taxi services such as Ola and Uber, making registration with the state’s transport department mandatory. The decision aims to strengthen passenger safety and bring aggregator-based transport services under a formal regulatory system.

Announcing the decision after the cabinet meeting, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh said that aggregator platforms operating taxi services in the state will now have to register with the authorities before offering their services.

Under the new rules, no app-based taxi will be allowed to operate without proper registration, vehicle fitness certification, medical examination of drivers, and police verification. The minister said the move is intended to ensure that passengers using such services have access to verified drivers and properly maintained vehicles.

The state government will issue licenses to aggregator companies after they pay a fee of Rs 5 lakh. Companies will also have to submit an application and comply with other regulatory requirements before they are allowed to operate in Uttar Pradesh.
