‘Made in India’ smartphone shipments declined 8 per cent&nbsp;YoY in Q3 2022 (July-September) to reach over 52 million units, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Made in India service. This is the first decline reported this year. Economic headwinds that led to a decline in consumer demand, and market uncertainties due to geopolitics were the prime reasons for the contraction, the report said.&nbsp;

Commenting on the local manufacturing ecosystem, Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh said, “The Made in India smartphone shipments declined in Q3 2022 as compared to Q3 2021. Two major forces impacted the growth of such smartphone shipments. First, the decline in consumer demand, especially in the entry-level segment, due to the negative macroeconomic indicators. Second, the high channel inventory at the start of the quarter also impacted the manufacturing during the quarter."

The country’s smartphone manufacturing ecosystem continues to grow with almost 63 per cent&nbsp;of such shipments coming from in-house manufacturers and 37 per cent&nbsp;from third-party EMS players. Oppo led the Made in India smartphone shipments in Q3 with a 24 per cent&nbsp;share, followed by Samsung and Vivo. BYD and Lava were the fastest-growing manufacturers in terms of smartphone shipments.

"Further, we will continue to see PLI disbursements in subsequent quarters, which will add to the local manufacturing landscape. Overall, the manufacturing trend is witnessing an upward trajectory with multiple partnerships happening in recent months, like the ones between Tata Group and Wistron and between Foxconn and Vedanta,"&nbsp;Prachir Singh added.

On the Indian government’s focus, Research Analyst Priya Joseph said, “On the regulatory front, despite the adverse global climate, the Indian smartphone market has remained resilient. The government’s efforts to bring about a supply chain shift and make India a manufacturing hub with constant policy interventions in the form of PLI schemes has helped the country to attract major global players across the value chain."

Further, the government is actively pursuing the target of expanding the local value addition from the present 17-18 per cent&nbsp;to 25 per cent&nbsp;in the near future.

"Looking ahead, we believe that the manufacturing volumes will grow with an increasing focus of the OEMs to export to other countries. Increasing local value addition and exports have been the main focus points of the government under the ‘Make in India’ scheme,"&nbsp;Singh added

When asked if Infinix will bring more smart devices, including smartwatches and TWS in the coming year, Kapoor replied: "I think this is the direction we want to take. That is why you see us adding a new category every year. We are working on evaluating a few things right now. In 2023 we will definitely be going to add one more category.

"It will take some more time to actually give you a final answer as to what we will going to go ahead with. But yes, we will be looking at the ecosystem over a period of time to give a connected device experience to the consumers. This is the journey where we want to go," he added.

On the availability of 5G and 4G smartphones in the India market, <a href="https://www.zeebiz.com/technology/mobiles/news-infinix-hot-20-5g-price-in-india-starts-at-rs-11999-check-sale-date-specifications-and-features-210511">Infinix India CEO</a> said that it is important to understand how the market functions.&nbsp;

He opined that it is important to understand consumers need, what 5G means to them, and the coverage limitations of the nascent technology in India. However, he feels that 5G is a very exciting technology that will change the country's landscape.

"We will keep coming up with 4G and 5G options. People who want to use 5G and they think they can use it, can go ahead with that option. We will keep coming up with complete phones like Zero 20 with high grade 4G options," he further added.

Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR told Zee Business: "Infinix has been able to carve a niche for itself in the hyper-competitive India smartphone market. With its differentiated product offerings, the brand is finding its own voice and appeal amongst consumers."

As per insights from CyberMedia Research (CMR) Infinix grew 76 per cent&nbsp;YoY in H1 2022 in the value for money smartphone segment (Rs 7,000 - Rs 25,000).

Talking about the contribution of Infinix in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make-in-India initiative, Anish Kapoor said: "Under Make-in-India initiative, we 'Make for India'.&nbsp;

This initiative is about getting something and making it here.

"We understand the local requirements, we internally call it 'Glocal'. While we are local, we focus on global requirements. We have set up a factory in Noida. Every phone sold in India is Made in India. There's nothing that comes from outside. It is an investment that we make.

"We don't involve a third party in the manufacturing. We have our own infrastructure. We've invested heavily in India and we will continue doing so," he signed off saying.

Google for India event 2022: The US-based tech giant Google on Monday announced a slew of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered initiatives to address language divide on the Internet, supporting digitisation of farmland in partnership with the Telangana government, and new investments to drive responsible development of AI in the country.

Apple iOS 16.2 update: In good news for iPhone 14 series users, the US-based tech giant Apple has started to roll out iOS 16.2, the second major update to the iOS 16 operating system (OS), which includes several new and improved features for the users such as improved always-on display.

"This update introduces Freeform, an app that offers a great place to brainstorm and bring your ideas to life. This release also adds Apple Music Sing, support for Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models, Lock Screen improvements, and other features and bug fixes for your iPhone. According to the the company, iPhone 14 Pro users will take advantage of improved always-on display settings that allow users to disable the mode's wallpaper and notifications if they are too distracting. End-to-end iCloud encryption in iOS 16.2 is called 'Advanced Data Protection' and is used to safeguard data like notes, iCloud backups and photos.
