<p>Google will pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle claims the company collected users’ data without permission, the state’s attorney general announced Friday.</p>

<p>Attorney General Ken Paxton described the settlement as sending a message to tech companies that he will not allow them to make money off of “selling away our rights and freedoms.”</p>

<p>“In Texas, Big Tech is not above the law.” Paxton said in a statement. “For years, Google secretly tracked people’s movements, private searches, and even their voiceprints and facial geometry through their products and services. I fought back and won.”</p>

<p>The agreement settles several claims Texas made against the search giant in 2022 related to geolocation, incognito searches and biometric data. The state argued Google was “unlawfully tracking and collecting users’ private data.”</p>

<p>Paxton claimed, for example, that Google collected millions of biometric identifiers, including voiceprints and records of face geometry, through such products and services as Google Photos and Google Assistant.</p>

<p>Google spokesperson José Castañeda said the agreement settles an array of “old claims,” some of which relate to product policies the company has already changed. “We are pleased to put them behind us, and we will continue to build robust privacy controls into our services,” he said in a statement.</p>

<p>The company also clarified that the settlement does not require any new product changes. Paxton said the $1.4 billion is the largest amount won by any state in a settlement with Google over this type of data-privacy violations.</p>

<p>Texas previously reached two other key settlements with Google within the last two years, including one in December 2023 in which the company agreed to pay $700 million and make several other concessions to settle allegations that it had been stifling competition against its Android app store.</p>

<p>Meta has also agreed to a $1.4 billion settlement with Texas in a privacy lawsuit over allegations that the tech giant used users’ biometric data without their permission.</p>

<p>Some countries are already topping up energy storage to avoid shortages during winter, Looney said.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, BP signed a 10-year piped natural gas supply deal with a unit of China`s Shenzhen Gas Group Co Ltd starting 2023.</p>

<p>BP also aims to supply 15% of India`s gas needs, Looney said.</p>

<p>Separately, BP wants to strengthen its energy-trading operation, one of the world`s largest, which will benefit from the company`s new focus on electric vehicle (EV) charging business.</p>

<p>"We intend to double down on and grow, particularly here in Europe, particularly in China and looking at the United States," Looney said referring to BP`s EV charging business.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, small British energy supplier Pure Planet, in which BP holds a stake of about 24%, ceased trading as many suppliers struggled with record wholesale energy prices.<br />

<p><strong>GST refunds authority 2019</strong>: Expect the GST refunds process to become faster and simpler than past, soon. News agency PTI reports that a single authority for sanctioning and processing GST refunds is in the offing as the Finance Ministry looks to speed up and simplify the process for exporters. If the authority is set up, getting GST refunds would become hassle-free and faster than it was in the last few years.&nbsp;The current mechanism entails a twin refund sanctioning authority of the central and state tax officers but that could well change by August when the proposed new structure involving a single authority comes in place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the system being worked out by the Revenue Department, the taxpayer will get full refund from his jurisdictional officer once the claim is sanctioned, while at the back-end the Centre and states will apportion the amount to be paid to each other. Currently, once a taxpayer files refund claim with the jurisdictional tax authority, say the central tax officer, then he would clear 50 per cent of the claims, and the remaining is cleared by the state tax officers after further scrutiny.</p>

<p>A similar system is followed when a taxpayer approaches the state tax officers for Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds. Thus, the time taken to clear the entire refund amount gets longer, leading to liquidity crunch for exporters -- an issue that the proposed single mechanism for refund clearing intends to fix. Under the proposed 'single authority mechanism', once a refund claim is filed with a tax officer, whether Centre or state, the officer will check, assess and sanction full tax refund (both Central GST and State GST portion), thereby removing difficulties faced by the taxpayers. This will later get adjusted/settled amongst the two tax authorities through internal account adjustments.</p>

<p>Currently, the two authorities settling the same refund claims adds to unnecessary complexities and inconvenience for the taxpayers. It has been seen that even after sanction/payment of refund by concerned jurisdictional tax officer, the counterpart tax authority at times tends to delay the GST refund.</p>

<p>As per the formula for division of GST assessees decided by the GST Council, state tax officials administer and control 90 per cent of the assessees below Rs 1.5 crore annual turnover, and the remaining 10 per cent is with the central tax officers.</p>

<p>The Centre and states share control of those assessees with annual turnover of over Rs 1.5 crore in 50:50 ratio.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Commenting on the move, AMRG &amp; Associates Partner Rajat Mohan said: "A single window tax refund in a federal, democratic economy would be a massive jump in ease of doing business. Inter government tax adjustments have to be done on month-on-month basis to avert any possibility of temporary revenue deficit to a particular government."</p>

<p>Currently,&nbsp; under the GST regime, there is a standardised form for making any claim for refunds. The claim and sanctioning procedure is completely online.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Andhra Pradesh election results 2019:&nbsp;</strong>YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which swept to power in Andhra Pradesh with a landslide victory, has bagged 151 seats in 175-member Assembly. It also won 22 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats. As counting in couple of constituencies continued past midnight with keen tussle between the YSRCP and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the final tally became clear early Friday. The TDP finished a distant second with 23 Assembly and three Lok Sabha seats. Actor Pawan Kalyan`s Jana Sena Party (JSP), which made the electoral debut, bagged one Assembly seat. Both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) drew blank. In 2014, the TDP had bagged 102 seats while its then ally BJP had won four seats. The YSRCP had won 67 seats while two independents were also elected. In the simultaneous Lok Sabha polls, TDP had won 15 seats, YSRCP eight and BJP two seats.</p>

<p>In the results declared late Thursday night, TDP` Galla Jayadev retained Guntur Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 4,800 votes over his nearest rival M. Venugopal Reddy of the YSRCP. TDP`s Kesineni Nani and K. Rammohan Naidu also retained Vijayawada and Srikakulam Lok Sabha seats respectively after a close contest.</p>

<p><strong>Jagan wins Pulivendula Assembly seat by over 90,000 votes</strong></p>

<p>YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has won the Pulivendula Assembly seat by a record margin of 90,110 votes, the Election Commission has declared. Jagan secured 1,32,356 of the total 1,80,127 votes polled. He defeated Telugu Desam's S V Satish Kumar Reddy who secured 42,246 votes.</p>

<p>When he was first elected to the state Assembly in 2014, Jagan won the Pulivendula seat -- his home turf in Kadapa district -- by a record margin then of 74,256 votes.<br />
On both the occasions, it was the highest victory margin secured by any candidate in state elections in Andhra Pradesh.</p>

<p>Jagan's YSRC has won 120 Assembly seats out of the total 175 and is heading towards victory in 30 more seats.</p>

<p>Jagan, son of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, will be formally elected as leader of YSRC Legislature Party on May 25. He will be sworn-in as the bifurcated state's second Chief Minister at a public function in Vijayawada on May 30.</p>

<p>Privatisation is not a remedy, which can make an airline profitable or efficient, and shuttering of Jet Airways and Kingfisher is a case in point, a senior Air India employees union official said Sunday even as he urged the government to reconsider its plans to de-nationalise the flag carrier, which are currently on hold. Supporting the 20,000 employees of the grounded Jet Airways, the union official said that the present policies of the government need to be relooked as they have only lead to a crisis in the industry and jobs of thousands of people are at stake. Weighted down by huge debt, majorly from the public sector banks, Kingfisher went belly-up in 2012.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jet Airways, which has a debt of Rs 8,500 crore, mostly from the government-run banks, ceased operations last Wednesday due to paucity of cash.</p>

<p>The abrupt closure of Jet Airways operations, for the time being, has put jobs of its over 20,000 employees. Moreover, as many as six airlines have closed down in the last five years. "First it was Kingfisher which folded up, and now its Jet Airways, which has stopped operations, albeit for the time being. The votaries of the privatisation, both in the government and outside, need to understand that denationalisation alone can't bring profitability and efficiency. Had it been so, the two private airlines would not have gone bust," said an Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) senior official.</p>

<p>Stating that the foremost reason for the current crisis in the aviation industry is the government's "reliance" on the private sector in achieving its ambitious Vision 2040, which has projected the country's air passenger traffic to grow to 1.1 billion per year by 2040, the union official said, "the industry is not doing well from the vision document point of view as the growth is not sustainable, healthy and even".</p>

<p>Calling the government to reconsider its plans of privatising Air India, which are put on the backburner for the time being, the ACEU official said even in the present crisis when Jet Airways passengers are stranded across airports globally, it is the national carrier which has come to the rescue of the passengers by announcing special fares for such passengers. "The government can't expect such a gesture from private airlines," he said.</p>

<p>"If the present crisis is allowed to continue, it will lead to an unprecedented crisis in the industry leading to more and more employees being thrown out of employment. A mere glance of problems indicate that there is something seriously wrong with the policy direction," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is also a need to put brakes on 'open sky policy' besides strict enforcement of bilateral to make the business of domestic companies, including of Air India, viable, he said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Jet Airways employees considered taking over the airline</strong></h2>

<p>Internal differences of opinion on employees taking over the management of Jet Airways did not permit pursuing the idea, but employees are ready to fully cooperate with any new investor for turning around the the financially crippled company, a senior official of the National Aviators Guild (NAG) said on Sunday. The NAG is the union of Jet Airways` pilots.</p>

<p>"We had internally discussed the issue of employee management but there were differing views, and so decided not to pursue the matter," NAG Vice-President Asim Vallani told IANS over the phone. When queried whether the employees volunteered for a pay cut in order turn the company around, Vallani said: "We are ready to work with the new investor and extend cooperation for the revival of the airline."</p>

<p>He said that their meeting on Saturday with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley went off well. "The Minister did ask us why banks should lend more money to the airline. We told him there is adequate security for the loan. About Rs 980 crore is needed for the airline to start operations again. We asked him for Rs 170 crore towards employee salaries," Vallani said.</p>

<p>According to the union official, Jaitley was requested to ensure that slots in the possession of Jet Airways are not given away to any other airline, to expedite the bidding process, and to request the state-run Indian Oil Corp to extend six months credit for fuel supplies as was done earlier for SpiceJet.</p>

<p><strong>Poorva Express accident: </strong>Due to the derailment of 12303 Howrah - New Delhi Poorva Express on NCR, the 12397 Gaya - New Delhi Mahabodhi Express and 12304 New Delhi - Howrah Poorva Express trains journey commencing on 20.04.2019 will remain cancelled. The 22432 Udhampur - Allahabad Express journey commencing on 21.04.2019 shall remain cancelled, railways said in a release today.&nbsp; As many as 13 people were injured on Saturday after 12 coaches of the Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express derailed near Kanpur, railway officials said.</p>

<p>Coaches of the train travelling from Prayagraj to New Delhi derailed at about 1 a.m near Rooma industrial estate, about 15 km from Kanpur. The coaches have been severely damaged, although there were no reports of any casualty. About 15 ambulances were rushed to the site of the accident to take injured passengers to the hospital. A 45-member team from the National Disaster Response Force is also at the spot.&nbsp;The passengers said that they heard a loud explosion before they were thrown off their seats.&nbsp;Indian Railways spokesperson Smita Vats Sharma told the media that a relief train with medical equipment had also reached the site. "No casualties, no serious injuries. All the passengers have been evacuated.</p>
