There is an urgent need for banks to reduce stressed assets and clean up the balance sheets which would increase their ability to raise capital and improve credibility, the Committee on Petitions said in its report tabled in Parliament today.

State-run lenders account for the bulk of India`s 9.5 trillion rupees in soured bank loans as of June. The surge in bad loans has choked new lending in an economy which needs more investment to help spur growth.
The meeting assumes significance in the light of the recent government announcement of fund infusion in the public sector banks over a period of two years.

The RBI had embarked on the AQR exercise from December 2015 and asked banks to recognise some top defaulting accounts as non-performing assets (NPAs) and make adequate provisions for them. It has had a debilitating impact on banks' numbers and their stocks. The central bank has set a deadline of March 2017 to complete the AQR exercise.

For fiscal year 2015-16, the public sector banks had gross advances of Rs 51,04,915 crore, of which Rs 5,02,068 crore (9.83%) was categorised as gross non-performing assets (GNPA), cited Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar in his written reply to Lok Sabha.
